Date: Saturday, October 8^th, 2011 Registration Time: 6pm

The Cultural Arts Center of St. Louis, LLC would like to hold an open call audition for dancers, actors, singers, etc. of all skill levels and styles. Any style of dance, song or short skit may apply. You will be contacted for a follow-up if you made it through the audition. There will be three judges to provide positive feedback to each auditioned.

Requirements:

· Submit an electronic version of résumé and headshot in advance to cacstlouis@gmail.com

· Bring one hardcopy of résumé and headshot (non-returnable) to the audition

· If music is needed for your act, please bring your CD containing a 3-minute or less song for audition (returnable).

Please Note:

· No Audition Fee

· Registration begins at 6pm

· A sound system will be provided

· The flooring is carpeted, please keep this in mind when considering shoes (dance or theatrical)

· No spectators are admitted into the audition; a waiting area will be provided

· Offensive language in the lyrics or interview will be automatic grounds for disqualification

Our cultural group had a wonderful time at the Hispanic Festival (Soldiers Memorial Park) on Sept. 17^th at 10am. The Ecuadorian handicrafts and clothing were a hit again this year. The Ecuadorian booth is our group’s favorite part of the festival each year; it would not be a complete festival without Ecuadorian clothing and handicrafts.

As a professional dancer of 18 years experience, Linsey A. Daman was asked to perform Flamenco at "Spanish Heritage Night" at a school in Hazelwood. Before the evening began, Linsey presented the history behind Flamenco and the origins of the footwear in both English and Spanish. This Spanish-speaking event was quite enjoyable for the whole family.

Italian Language Learning Tools

Lyric Language – Italian

The Cultural Arts Center of St. Louis, LLC loves and cherishes the Lyric Language – Italian I and Italian II because they clearly promote easy and fast learning of Italian. This is probably the fastest way to learn essential vocabulary in a fast-paced manner because you can hear the Italian, see the Italian and watch the Italian being acted out. It is wonderful for those who like to learn visually and it is also backed with audio to reinforce what you are seeing on the screen. The songs are slow so you can appropriately learn the pronunciation and also they repeat the lyrics over and over again for repetition. Even fluent speakers should invest in Lyric Language because it is an essential program to have for Italian immersion. This is probably the best product out there to truly learn Italian in a fun and fast manner. Great Educational Tool!

Living Language – Italian

This is another wonderful way to learn Italian from the beginning. It has a book to follow along with the Italian audio and the best part is that they read slowly. The pages are sub-divided into English and Italian so you always know the meaning of the words. They give you about 5 ways to learn the same thing so if you forget how to say something in Italian, there is always an alternative. The book/audio shows you those alternatives because there is more than one way to say things in any language. I have never seen another language program that really emphasizes those options of “more ways to say it” or “additional ways with similar meanings.” This program book/audio will truly help beginners open their vocabulary to the magnificent world of Italian communication. Remember, there is more than one way to communicate your message! Enjoy!

Prego – An Invitation to Italian

This is a wonderful book to master the basics of Italian. The text is straight forward and is a wonderful place to start with learning this language. When I started with Italian, this was the original textbook that was assigned to me. Great place to start the Italian Language!

Three Brothers – Italian Film

The Cultural Arts Center of St. Louis, LLC highly recommends “Three Brothers” as a wonderful way to practice your Italian. The plot line is family-oriented and very entertaining in all respects. The film does make you evaluate your own life and count your blessings. The film does have English subtitles so it can be understood even if you are still in the process of learning Italian. They do speak fast and is recommended for higher level Italian classes to study and therefore it would not be suitable for beginners.

The film explores the inner workings of the three Italian brothers whose mother had just recently died. Each brother is completely different in regards to career, personality and personal ambitions. Two of the three brothers are very positive and professional in nature but the third one is on the negative side and even the wrong side of the law in some cases. It is very interesting to watch the family dynamics of this Italian family. Overall, it is a wonderful “slice of life” film set in Italy that truly is entertaining and well-done on all levels. CAC St. Louis, LLC gives this movie 5-stars for Italian drama.

Il Postino

This is a very heart-felt romantic movie that shows a slice of life in Italy. It is good for those learning Italian because the plot is easy to follow and direct. The ending was quite a shock and was unexpected. You will hear a dash of Spanish about ¾ of the way into the film due to the fact that one of the actors is from Chile. The Spanish is not subtitled since the whole movie is in Italian with English subtitles.

You Laugh

This film shows the sad life of an Italian accountant in Italy who has trouble sleeping and ends up losing his wife due to his snoring/laughing problems. He is very depressed over these sleeping problems and contacts a sleep doctor who doesn’t offer much help.

The film then cuts into another section regarding two kidnappings in Italy over two different time periods. The two plots are completely different and are not related at all. The first section with the Italian accountant is much better than the second half in regards to plot and acting.

St. Martin – The Kapok Tree

Originally from Africa, these trees were introduced by the slaves. St. Martiners considered the kapok tree as the tree of spirits. It was associated with spiritual powers and one would find objects to do with the supernatural beneath its roots. St. Martiners are still reluctant to uproot these old trees today.

Course Description:

Psycholinguistics – The Psychology of Language

Psycholinguistics is the study of the processes involved in language including acquisition, comprehension, production, pragmatics and discourse. Linguistics is the study of language including its properties and functions; however we will take it a step further to understand the psychology behind what we say in daily conversation. To begin we will start by defining language and its six properties. We will then venture into internal and external factors that have a pivotal role in our neurobiology. We will also define the four components of language which are phonemes, morphemes, syntax and discourse. Moreover, this course will introduce psychological, sociological and anthropological research and theories on the structure of language and language processes, including speech perception, word recognition, meaning representation, comprehension, production and language acquisition. The focus will be on empirical studies on these topics.

Psycholinguistics II will immediately follow the first series for those interested in continuing their education.

The Haunted Beauregard-Keyes House

Can be found across from the Convent of Ursula in the French Quarter.

Address: 1113 Charles Street, New Orleans, Louisiana.

History:

This grand mansion, built in 1812, is a strong candidate for being the most haunted house in New Orleans. General Pierre Gustave Toutant de Beauregard lived in this house until 1869. General Beauregard was the commanding officer of the Southern troops at the bloody battle at Shiloh.

At 2:00 in the morning, on foggy, moonlit nights, General Beauregard and his troops materialize out of the wood paneled walls along the hallway near the ballroom. The living are treated to the clattering footsteps of his entire phantom troops. All the soldier apparitions and the General appear in full Confederate dress uniform, and then slowly turn bloody and tattered, as if they are revisiting their bloody battle.
Also, an apparition fiddler player and dancing entities have their own dance party in the ballroom, complete with fiddle music, perhaps reenacting a happier time.

While watching I felt that film demonstrated the grace and beauty behind this form of martial arts. Día Mundial del Ambiente – June 5th

Desde 1973, los 5 de junio de cada año se celebra el Día Mundial del Ambiente que fue establecido por la Asamblea General de Naciones Unidas, en su Resolución (XXVII) del 15 de diciembre de 1972 con la que se dio inicio a la Conferencia de Estocolmo, Suecia, cuyo tema central fue el Ambiente.

Ese mismo día, la Asamblea General de la ONU aprobó la creación del Programa de las Naciones Unidas para el Ambiente (PNUMA).

Se podría decir que el Día Mundial del Ambiente es un vehículo por medio del cual la Organización de Naciones Unidas sensibiliza a la opinión mundial en relación a temas ambientales, intensificando la atención y la acción política y cuyos objetivos principales son darle un contexto humano, motivando a las personas para que se conviertan en agentes activos del desarrollo sustentable y equitativo; promover el papel fundamental de las comunidades en el cambio de actitud hacia temas ambientales, y fomentar la cooperación, pues ésta garantizará que todas las naciones y personas disfruten de un futuro más próspero y seguro. El Día Mundial del Ambiente es un evento en el que se realizan múltiples actividades: concentraciones en calles, conciertos ecológicos, ensayos y competencias de afiches en escuelas y colegios, plantaciones de árboles, campañas de reciclaje y de limpieza, entre otras.

Es además, un suceso multimedial que lleva a periodistas a escribir y hacer reportajes críticos acerca del ambiente. Documentales televisivos, exhibiciones fotográficas, eventos intelectuales como seminarios, mesas redondas, conferencias, sólo por nombrar algunos.

En muchos países esta celebración es una oportunidad de firmar o ratificar convenios internacionales y, algunas veces, establece estructuras gubernamentales permanentes relacionadas con el manejo ambiental y la planificación económica.

Las principales celebraciones internacionales en el 2006 se llevaron a cabo en Argelia. Ese año el tema elegido fue "Desiertos y Desertificación" y el lema ¡No Abandones a los desiertos!, enfatizando la importancia de proteger a las tierras áridas, las cuales cubren más del 40% de la superficie del planeta.

El 2007 en cambio las actividades se llevaron a cabo en Tromsø (Noruega) y el lema escogido fue "El deshielo, ¿un tema candente?"

En 2008 la sede fue Nueva Zelandia, el lema: ¡Deja el hábito! Hacia una economía baja en carbono.

En 2009 la sede es México, y el lema:“Tu Planeta te Necesita – Unidos para Combatir el Cambio Climático”.

En 2010 la sede será Rwanda y el lema: "Muchas especies. Un Planeta. Un Futuro".

International Holiday: Corpus Christi

Corpus Christi (latín: 'Cuerpo de Cristo') o Solemnidad del Cuerpo y la Sangre de Cristo (antes llamada Corpus Domini ('Cuerpo del Señor') es una fiesta de la Iglesia Católica destinada a celebrar la Eucaristía. Su principal finalidad es proclamar y aumentar la fe de la Iglesia Católica en Jesucristo presente en el Santísimo Sacramento. La celebración se lleva a cabo el siguiente jueves al octavo domingo después del Domingo de Resurrección (es decir, 60 días después del Domingo de Resurrección; formalmente es el jueves que sigue al noveno domingo siguiente a la primera luna llena de primavera del hemisferio norte).

En muchos lugares es una fiesta de especial relevancia y en varios países es un día festivo oficial (ciertas partes de España, Austria, partes de Alemania y Suiza, Brasil, República Dominicana, Bolivia, Colombia, Croacia, Polonia, Trinidad y Tobago, Portugal, Perú y Venezuela).

Procesión del Corpus Christi en Toledo

Las fiestas del Corpus Christi en Toledo son las más importantes de la ciudad, especialmente por la Procesión en torno a la custodia de Enrique de Arfe, pieza única de orfebrería, que desfila el jueves de Corpus Christi y en la fiesta litúrgica del Corpus Christi el domingo siguiente. Esta Procesión fue declarada Fiesta de Interés Turístico Internacional en 1980.

Las fiestas del Corpus Christi en Valenzuela son muy importantes para esta población de tal importancia que viene ya desde lejos su título de Fiesta de Interés Turístico Nacional.Este título se debe a los preciosos bordados de los balcones y fachadas de las casas de un pueblo blanco la más elaborada floristeria en las aceras y calles ,la gran cantidad de altares esparcidos por las calles, y sobre todo las largas ,multicolores, elaboradas y más preciosas ``alfombras´´, eso si su peculiaridad es que son de serrín tintado no como las otras poblaciones que son de pétalos o simplemente no existen.Un punto a destacar es que no es un jueves como acostumbramos sino el domindo siguiente del jueves de Corpus Christi, para que todos podamos disfrutar de su esplendor y participar en la noche del sabado en la tradicional puesta de serrin donde podemos participar todos:niños y mayores, turistas y habitantes de valenzuela...y para reponer fuerzas un buen chocolate ofrecido por algunas calles o unas pastas tradicionales de esta población.

What lurks beneath the dark waters of Scotland’s Loch Ness? New documents show that as late as the 1930’s police in Scotland thought some sort of creature inhabited the Highlands Lake. Police were so sure of its existence that they worried about how to protect it from hunters.

Newly released files from the National Archive of Scotland show that local officials asked Britain’s Parliament to investigate the issue and confirm the monster’s existence – in the interest of science. Lawmakers were skeptical.

The idea didn’t get very far in the end. The files, released Monday, show that it deemed better not to kill the monster – or the myth – by stationing cameras or observers around the lake.

Growing up in Hong Kong, I still remember how I felt when I heard the thundering drumbeats. How my heart pounded with those drums. I cheered on my favorite boat as the rowers dipped and sliced their oars in rhythm with the beats. The oarsmen bent and pulled in perfect timing.

The boats glided on the surface of the water so smoothly, they looked as if they were being pulled across a sheet of ice. One boat would surge ahead, then another, as the crews wrestled for the lead. Electrifying chills would shimmy up and down my spine as the rowers propelled their boats across the finish line. The first team to grab the flag at the end of the course won the race.

According to royal sources, Kate Middleton is taking the words of Marie Antoinette seriously. She is going into business with her younger brother James, who has been running a baking company since 2007. She will be fulfilling a secret plan to open and up-market cake shop in King’s Road, Chelsea.

Stung by criticism that she doesn’t have a full-time job, she has, apparently, been doing “market research” by frequenting Love Bakery in King’s Road, where she ordered one of every cake.

James developed The Cake Kit Company after quitting Edinburgh University at the end of his first year. Designed partly to encourage children to cook and partly to make the baking of party cakes easier, his company provides everything needed for baking, including a step-by-step guide.

It isn’t clear what Kate’s role will be in the company, but whatever it is, I doubt whether it will be very difficult: it will just be a piece of cake.

Sherlock Holmes Museum in London celebrated its 20th birthday this year. It opened in March 1990 and I joined them shortly afterwards.

At first, we were sitting on the stairs waiting for the doorbell to ring, and if we received 20 callers in a day, that was a lot. Now, it's more like 20 callers in a minute and in the summer it could as well go to 20 a second.

The credit crunch will never affect the museum – Sherlock Holmes is too popular. And the cause of popularity? “Word of mouth – we never advertise” says director John Riley.

Uniting Colombia with Music

International News: Denmark’s New Dress

Ostensibly designed as means to open discussions of global warming at cocktail parties, the Climate Dress may provide even more important, more immediate value.

Made by Diffus, a design studio based in Copenhagen, Denmark, the garment incorporates a soft conductive thread that permits the sewing of embroidery-like features. Scattered throughout the embroidery are more than 100 LEDs that pulse with a soft glow at regular intervals.

If the embedded lights begin to blink quickly, even frantically, however then you might be in trouble. Activating the light display is a micro-controller connected to a CO2 sensor hidden in the dress-wearer’s hair.

Both data and power run through the threads of the dress – no other wiring or components are required to operate the dress. The hidden sensor constantly scanning the air for CO2 levels and feeds the data to a 2-in. microprocessor made specifically for wearable fabrics.

Through the light display, the dress announces changes in ambient CO2 levels. If worn at an outdoor event, it might simply spark conversations about rising (or lowering) pollution levels, and what that means for global health and security. If worn during an indoor event, it might show that there were too many people doing too much heavy breathing.

Diffus was aided in the design and completion of the outfit by embroidery company Forster Rohner AG of St. Gallen, Switzerland.

According to Diffus, the industrialization of soft-circuit production is a milestone that will open up new possibilities for working with intelligent textiles. Future outfits could include health monitoring capabilities, for example, or could receive wireless signals from environmental sensors placed wherever one might walk.

BERLIN - El "PlanetSolar", la nave más grande del mundo propulsada exclusivamente con energía solar, fue bautizado y botado hoy en la ciudad de Kiel (norte de Alemania), en una ceremonia que sirvió de preludio a las pruebas de navegación antes de que este catamarán emprenda un viaje alrededor del mundo.

Trece toneladas de baterías

Con 31 metros de largo por 15 de ancho y una superficie fotovoltaica de 500 metros cuadrados, el "PlanetSolar" es la primera embarcación que se ha construido con estas características y con la que se quiere demostrar las posibilidades de las energías renovables.

Una vez acabada su construcción y tras unos meses de retraso, hoy ha sido el día de la botadura y desde poco después del mediodía la nave flota sobre el agua, lista para que comiencen las pruebas técnicas que llevarán a cabo los especialistas de la compañía "Sun Power Corporation", creadores del proyecto.

Desarrollado por un equipo internacional de ingenieros, físicos y constructores navales, la energía para navegar la obtendrá a partir de unas 38 mil placas solares, que presentarán una eficiencia de, al menos, el 22 por ciento, la más alta de las que se comercializan, según fuentes de la compañía.

Se espera que este catamarán se convierta en el barco solar que cruce en menos tiempo el océano Atlántico y el primero que navegue tanto por el Pacífico como por el Índico.

La cubierta del barco cuenta con un espacio de 500 metros cuadrados de placas solares fotovoltaicas, conectadas a baterías que pesan 13 toneladas, casi un cuarto del peso total de la embarcación, que asciende a 60 toneladas.

La empresa alemana GAIA ha desarrollado las baterías de la nave, que pueden acumular hasta 1,3 megavatios de energía bajo cubierta, lo que permitirá al barco navegar en la oscuridad o en medio de una tormenta.

Diseñado por el ingeniero neozelandés Craig Loomes, el catamarán lleva dos patines-flotador hidrodinámicos que van unidos por cuatro patas a su casco, todo ello construido en carbono ligero para limitar su peso al máximo.

Dotado de dos hélices de carbono el doble de grandes de lo normal para una nave de su tamaño y que harán también la función de timón, el catamarán es propulsado por cuatro motores eléctricos con una potencia de 176 kilovatios, aunque con un consumo ideal de sólo 20 kilovatios por hora.

As life expectancy increases, our eyes bear the brunt of aging; many of the elderly suffer from vision problems. One of the leading causes of eye problems in the Western world is macular degeneration. To correct this, retinal impacts, generally consisting of about 60 electrodes, have been inserted into the back of the eye. The patient wears glasses incorporating a tiny camera that views what the patient normally would, and the camera sends the image data to a minuscule computer. The compute converts the data to electrical signals, which are sent to the implant and processed by the brain. While garnering attention, these implants have yet to truly restore vision that’s any sharper than fuzzy images.

A multidisciplinary team lead by Daniel Palanker from Stanford University in California is taking implants a step future using LCD technology, the infrared spectrum and photovoltaics. While the subject is wearing what look like goggles with an LCD screen inside, the image on the LCD screen – the image the patient would normally see – is projected with pulsed infrared light onto photovoltaic cells implanted under the retina.

Israel’s Newest Invention – Window Cleaner

A group of researchers at Tel Aviv University in Israel found a self-cleaning coating that will make window washing a thing of the past.

Led by Ehud Gazit, a professor in the department of molecular microbiology and biotechnology, the team discovered a way of controlling atoms and molecules of peptides to make them grow into what look like tiny blades of grass of “nanotubules.” The blades are about 100nm in size – much smaller than a particle of dust. When the nanotubules group together, they form tiny, water-repellent forests. Because the nanotubules were created in a vacuum under high temperatures, the researchers know they can withstand extreme heat.

They see the water-repellent material as a potential coating for skyscraper windows and solar panels. Any dirt or dust that accumulated on the surface would be washed off by rainwater.

A Polish Discovery – Artist's Signature

Scientists in Poland have described how optical coherence tomography (OCT) – a technique most often used in medical imaging – can be used to reveal the forgery of an artist’s signature or changes in inscriptions on 100-year old paintings.
Piotr Targowski of the Institute of Physics at Nicolaus Copernicus University in Torun, Poland, notes that easel paintings prepared according to traditional techniques consists of multiple layers. The artist, for instance, first applies a glue sizing over the canvas to ensure proper adhesion of later layers. Those layers may include an outline of the painting, the painting itself, layers of semitransparent glazes and, finally, a transparent varnish.

Una Teoría Francesa – Los Océanos

Los océanos de la Tierra no deben su origen a la actividad volcánica de nuestro planeta, como se creía, sino a la colisión de asteroides gigantes hace millones de años, según el estudio de un experto del Centro Nacional de la Investigación Científica de Francia (CNRS), recogido en la revista “Nature”.

Esas son las conclusiones que ha hecho públicas hoy el CNRS, a tenor de las investigaciones del científico Francis AlbarŠde, quien sostiene que “asteroides gigantes cubiertos de hielo” chocaron contra la Tierra entre 80 y 130 millones de años después de la formación del planeta.

Según la tesis de AlbarŠde, la colisión de estos cuerpos helados extraterrestres provocó además un movimiento de las placas tectónicas que favoreció la creación de los continentes y los océanos, condición probablemente necesaria para la aparición de la vida, indica el CNRS en un comunicado.

Este fenómeno sería también responsable de la formación de la atmósfera, hasta ahora atribuida a los “vapores emitidos durante el amanecer de nuestro planeta”.
Según el investigador francés, esos impactos pudieron también repetirse en Marte, pero “el agua se habría secado antes de llegar a penetrar en profundidad”, mientras que en lo que a Venus se refiere, nadie sabe cuáles eran las condiciones del segundo planeta del sistema solar antes de que una intensa actividad volcánica remodelase su superficie.

Los científicos sostienen que treinta millones de años después de la formación del sistema solar, la Tierra fue objeto de un impacto lunar que dio origen a nuestro planeta y a su satélite.

Sin embargo, dicha colisión no pudo ser responsable de la formación del agua, pues los vientos electromagnéticos y el joven sol “eran todavía demasiado calientes para que el agua y los elementos volátiles se condensaran”, sostiene AlbarŠde.

“La llegada masiva de elementos volátiles a nuestro planeta correspondería a un fenómeno que se desarrolló algunas decenas de años después del impacto lunar”, agregan las explicaciones del CNRS.

Es por eso que un grupo de investigadores intentaron explicar la ciencia, detrás de las casa embrujadas.

Con el objetivo de averiguar si era posible inducir artificialmente experiencias paranormales, investigadores del Goldsmith College de Londres y el arquitecto, Usman Haque, diseñaron un cuarto “científicamente embrujado”. El estudio estuvo inspirado por otros que indicaban que se habían tenido experiencias paranormales en lugares con ondas de infrasonidos por debajo del nivel del oído humano y flujo geomagnético causado por el movimiento de las placas tectónicas. Persiguiendo éste objetivo, construyeron una tienda blanca en la sala de una casa de Londres con bocinas ocultas.

Mujer dejó morir porque no dijo Amén

Por más de una semana, Ria Ramkissoon observó pasivamente mientras su hijo de un año de edad se moría, negándole comida y agua porque la anciana con quien vivía dijo que era la voluntad de Dios.

Javon Thompson estaba poseído por un espíritu maligno, se le dijo Ramkissoon, porque no decía “Amén” durante la oración de la comida. Javon no hablaba mucho, dada su edad, pero ya había dicho “Amén” anteriormente, testificó Ramkissoon en una corte estadounidense en Baltimore.

El día que Javon murió, Ramkisson se le dijo que lo “alimentara otra vez para reanimarlo”. Hizo puré con unas zanahorias para alimentar al niño, pero ya no podía tragar. Ramkissoon puso sus manos sobre el pecho del niño para confirmar que su corazón había dejado de latir.

Immigrant Innovator – Mexico

One of the world’s most respected dance companies, The Limón Dance Company, was born from the creative genius of Mexican immigrant José Limón. From his birth in Sinaloa, Mexico in 1908 to his family’s move to California and his eventual arrival in the city of New York, his journey was a long one. It was in 1946 when his venture came to life in Manhattan, influencing dancers and spectators alike to this day. The Limón Dance Foundation continues Jose’s legacy, with performances, professional studies and dissemination of the original Limón dance technique and repertory. Students from around the world come to learn his inspirational work, and to continue this one time Mexican immigrant's dream within the constantly changing universe of dance.

The Latin Culture of Facebook

In the first study of the race and ethnicity of the US users, Facebook found that Latinos have flocked to the social networking giant in recent years, illustrating the growing diversity of online users as the Internet matures. The study by Facebook estimated that 9 percent of the social network’s approximately 100 million US members are Latino – more than triple the proportion from when the site was launched in 2004. While Facebook’s Hispanic membership is growing, it is still below Latinos’ 15 percent share of the US population.

Anselm Kiefer, German Artist

On March 4th at the St. Louis Art Museum, Buzz Spector the Dean of College & Graduate School of Art spoke on the famous German artist Anselm Kiefer.

Spector explained the religious significance behind several of Kiefer’s works of art however he focused the majority of the time on a piece done in 1990 called “Breaking of the Vessels.” Being that it is modern art and for most the shards of broken glass mean nothing more than broken glass – however he shared with the audience the hidden depth and profound meaning behind this significant piece of art.

“Breaking of the Vessels” (1990) resembles a three-layered bookshelf and originally the vessels were on the shelves. When the Holocaust came about the vessels that contained evil fell from the shelves and evil was unleashed onto mankind.

“The art appears to be in a state of disaster because if it wasn’t a disaster – there would be no ruins and therefore the works of art that Kiefer demonstrates are in ruins to symbolize the disaster that was brought down on mankind during the Holocaust” (Buzz Spector).

Whitby Abbey, England

Whitby Abbey is a ruined Benedictine abbey sited on the East Cliff, 199 steps above Whitby harbour in North Yorkshire on the north-east coast of England.

The abbey buildings fell into ruins, and were mined for stone, but remained a prominent landmark for sailors and helped inspire Bram Stoker's Dracula. The ruins are now owned and maintained by English Heritage.

YAP – A paradisiacal island encircled by manta rays and situated in the remotest of the Federated States of Micronesia, Yap remains largely untouched by modernity. Along with its distinctive stone money and preservation of indigenous culture, Yap is home to a profusion of homeless animals, particularly dogs, who suffer frequent abuse, many at the hands of locals uneducated in human treatment of animals. This island is also without a resident veterinarian. Without a veterinarian, the feral dog population cannot be controlled, and those who do adopt stray dogs cannot vaccinate them or treat their illnesses.

Delobel and Schoenfelder teamed up after former world champions Irina Moiseeva and Andrei Minenkov of Russia suggested at a training camp in 1990 that they should skate together ... Delobel and Schoenfelder are the 1996 world junior silver medalists ... Delobel's twin sister Veronique also competed internationally in ice dancing, and she also skated with her brother Laurent ... They finally broke through with their first world medal at the 2008 World Championships, winning the gold ... Schoenfelder married Isabelle Pecheur in May 2005; their son Gabriel was born in October 2006 ... Delobel announced she was pregnant with her first child in April 2009.

Figure Skating: French Pair

VANCOUVER (AFP) – French pairs skaters Yannick Bonheur and Vanessa James are set to create history on Sunday when they become the first black couple to compete in figure skating at the Olympic Games.

Getting to Vancouver has been a long journey for the duo who teamed up just over two years ago after Bonheur put an advert on the internet after splitting with previous partner Marylin Pla.

Canadian-born James' aunt saw it and convinced her niece, who has lived in England since she was a child, to reply.

James, 22, arrived in France for a trial run and never left with the duo teaming up in December 2007.

"It's destiny and I'm very happy about it," said 27-year-old Bonheur.

"There's the grace and beauty of Vanessa and then my athleticism. And the fact that we're both black brings a pleasing visual harmony."

James previously competed internationally for Britain as a single's skater. She was the 2006 British national champion and 2007 silver medallist.

The pair moved to Indianapolis in the United States in August 2009 to train with Russian coach Sergei Zaitsev.

And last December they booked their ticket to Vancouver by winning the French nationals, a victory which enabled James to receive French citizenship.

Bonheur said they were determined that their Olympic experience will lay the groundwork for future successes, after they finished seventh at Europeans.

"This is just the beginning. We want to make a name for ourselves so that they'll remember us for next season," he said.

Being tagged the first black pairs skaters is not a disadvantage, they insist.

"It's often been remarked that we look different on the ice. So we want to highlight that," said Bonheur.

"We want to climb the ladder to show that black skaters can stand on the podium."

Didier Gailhaguet, president of the French skating federation, added: "They have a really exceptional look about them."

Clothing sizes in France are not the same in the United States. In order to know your French size, you have to do a little math:

For women, add 30 to your American size. For example, if you’re a size 10, your French size is 40.

In additional to the hotels classified in the Guide Michelin, France has many small inns (des auberges, des pensions) that resemble bed-and-breakfast establishments in the United States. These inns are frequently less expensive and tend to have a great deal of charm. The service is not as extensive as in larger hotels, but it is often more personalized.

The French often consult their local pharmacist when they’re not feeling well. If the pharmacist considers the illness to be serious, he or she will advise the customers to see a doctor. In case of a cold, flu, or minor accident, the pharmacist will recommend over-the-counter medicine and will do some first aid. Every city and town in France has at least one pharmacy that remains open all night. All other pharmacies have signs on their doors indicating which pharmancy has long hours.

Cultural Overview - French Education

In 1971, France passed a law that created a system of continuing education for adults who, for whatever reason, were not able to complete their education when they were younger. This system is called “la formation permanente” and is designed to diminish the educational inequalities that exist in France. Since 1971, millions of French people have taken advantage of continuing education programs to advance their jobs. Adults are now able to take bac equivalency exams in order to attend the university. In France, social status, pay and job advancement are very closely tied to educational degrees. A second chance to go to college is therefore very important. However, compared to the U.S., there very few returning adult students at the universities. Instead, most of them are in vocational programs that develop specific skills and prepare for specific jobs.

French Culture – Le Jeu de Boules (La Pétanque)

Le jeu de boules or la pétanque is very popular in France. It’s played on flat, often sandy, ground. One of the players throws the small wooden ball (le cochonnet) a distance from the players. The game then consists of each player throwing metal balls (les boules) toward the cochonnet with the goal of coming as close to the wooden ball as possible. The person or team with the balls closest to the wooden ball wins the game.

One of the first things you notice when you arrive in Paris is that there are apartments everywhere – over stores, over restaurants, over banks…. It almost seems that there are no houses in the city. Four out of every five Parisians live in rented apartments – and that fifth Parisian probably lives in an apartment, too, but he or she owns it, rather than rents.

Why are there so many apartments? Honestly, there is just no room for individual houses. Besides, apartments have been a part of Parisian life for a long time. Many of today’s apartments have been a part of Parisian life for a long time. Many of today’s apartments date from the mid-nineteenth century, a time when Paris was being almost totally reshaped by Napoleon III and his city planner, Baron Georges Haussmann. In those days, the city was clogged with slums, and streets were narrow. Haussmann cut spacious boulevards and avenues through Paris, tearing down more than 20,000 houses and replacing them with twice as many apartments.

CHICAGO – Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) could help identify forged artworks. Researchers are using it to analyze paintings by 19th-century Mary Cassatt and the pastels she used to identify whether the materials were natural, synthetic or organic colorants. Determining the pastels’ chemical classes will help the scientists to distinguish between specific dyes, revealing the era in which a work of art was crated and perhaps whether it is authentic.

Richard Van Duyne, a chemistry professor at Northwestern University, and colleagues have accomplished the first direct extraction less and nonhydrolysis SERS study of delicate pieces of art.

ADELAIDE, Australia – Australian researchers are rewriting the rules on how light behaves when confined in ever-smaller optical fibers. Everything has its limits, and light-carrying optical fibers are no exception. Until now, it was thought that, as the size of the optical fiber shrinks, light becomes more and more confined until it reaches a point beyond which it cannot be squeezed any smaller, and it rapidly begins to diverge. This ultimate point was thought to occur when the strand of fiber is just a few hundred nanometers in diameter.

Nos, Shahraam Afhar and colleagues Wen Qi Zhang, Heike Ebendorff-Heidepriem and Yanay Monro at the University of Adelaide have discovered that they can push beyond the limit by almost a factor of two. They can do this thanks to a break-through in the theoretical understanding of how light behaves at the nanoscale, and thanks to the use of a new generation of nanoscale optical fibers being developed at the university.

Stimulating Sustainability – Trends in Government Policy

Germany previously was known for its automobile industry. Now it is solar. Not bad for a country with more clouds than sun.

The country achieved its title as the world leader in solar industry largely through its ambitious feed-in tariffs. When the new government took over last fall, however, there were concerns that feed-in tariffs would be slashed by 30 percent. That did not happen. Tariffs already were set to drop between 9 and 11 percent this year, so the new government’s reduction of 15 percent is not hard to swallow.

The results of Germany’s gross feed-in tariffs are many: jobs, a strong solar industry and an increase in energy generated by the sun.

Cafés vs. Restaurants in France

In America, “café” is usually just another word for a small restaurant. But if you went into a café in France and tried to order a meal, the waiter might think you were joking. You see, le café is the French word for coffee, and that is one of the main things that cafés serve. You might be able to get a grilled ham and cheese sandwich (un croquet-monsieur), or some other simple dish, but for the most part, cafés serve mainly coffee, tea, wine and other drinks.

Thirst is not the chief reason for going to a café. Most people go there because it is a good place to sit and talk. Or they may go because they enjoy watching people. In good weather, most cafés set up tables out-side on the sidewalk (sur la terrasse), with the chairs facing the street. This way, customers can watch the world go past while they drink a cup of coffee (un café) or sip a glass of Coke (un Coca).

Cultural Profile – Les Champs-Elysées

The Avenue des Champs-Elysées is possibly the most famous street in the entire world, yet it stretches for only 1.6 kilometers (less than one and a quarter miles) from the Place de la Concorde (where the guillotine stood during the French Revolution) to Napoléon’s enormous Arch de Triomphe on the Place Charles de Gaulle.

From one end to the other, the Champs-Elysées is an international street. As you walk along the tree-lined sidewalks – which are themselves as broad as an average two-lane street-chances are that you will be able to hear a dozen or more languages. You may spot a group of Arab officials in flowing white robes, Japanese businessmen in dark suits, or African students in dashikis – in short, you see people from all around the world. To add to the international flavor, when a foreign leader is in town, the avenue may be decorated with the flags of his or her country.

Cultural Outlook - Valued Nature in France

Most French people are great lovers of nature. Many of them dream of a small home in the country with trees and a vegetable garden, where they could go on weekends. But in the city, it is sometimes difficult to stay close to nature. For this reason, just about every French city and town has set aside a sizeable amount of land for parks.

City-dwellers looks on les parcs (also called les jardins publics) as their backyards, in a way, they go there often to relax. There are different sorts of parks. One kind – which the French call à l’anglaise (English style) – is wooded, and often has a pond or lake. Another kind – à la française – also has trees, but they are planted in perfectly straight rows. These parcs à la française usually have fountains, statues and gravel paths beside neatly clipped lawns.

The larger parks offer many activities. Sometimes there are pony rides for children. Some parks have outdoor puppet shows, too, where people of all ages stop to watch the antics of Guignol, the most famous French puppet character. (The show itself is called le Guignol.) Occasionally there are booths where collectors can buy stamps and coins.

When we talk about families, we usually mean only parents and their children. But when the French talk about their family, they are probably including their grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins. In large families, this is, this may add up to forty or fifty people or even more. Holidays and vacations are often spent with these relatives. Occasions such as weddings and baptism are family times, and everyone makes a special effort to attend.

The smaller family of parents and their children then to spend a lot of time together, too. If you ask a teenager what he or she did on the weekend, there’s a good chance that the answer will be “I went to the country with my family,” or “I spent time with my family.” Of course, not all leisure time is spent with parents – young people also go out with their friends. But in general, quite a bit of time is set aside for activities with the family.
